The proper boot order
If you get a "HFS+ partition error" in a dual boot situation (possibly in the event you had to re-install either OS after setting up your OS selection menu) it is possible that the wrong partition, or no partition, has been designated as the primary partition. If using Vista, boot to the Vista installation disk and choose the Repair Computer option and open the command line.
At the command line, follow the procedure first used in setting up the dual partition situation (the end of a line denotes pressing enter to complete the command):
diskpart
list disk
select disk
list partition
select partition
active (if this doesn’t work, try set active)
Attempt your boot again. If this does not help, or if you are not in a dual boot situation, the next easiest thing to do is to format your hard drive and just start over.
You can also try downloading Gparted Live CD. Boot into that and then read the online documentation on how to create and format your partitions and disks. Create 3 partitions of any size, as long as the X86 partition is larger than 7GB. Create a NTFS partition, a EXT3 partition, and a FAT32 partition.
Install Windows first. Either Vista or XP is fine, but beware, I just installed Vista and it takes of 10GB! Then Install Ubuntu Linux (download the ISO or get a free ship-it CD from them, shipping is free) or another flavour as long as it has GRUB built into it. I recommend Ubuntu for its ease of use and GRUB. Then Install X86. Using DiskUtility to format your FAT32 partition as FAT32 once, then format it with HFS Journaled (HFS+). The installation only takes about 10 minutes or so, but Vista takes a little longer and so does Ubuntu.
You can also use the GParted Live CD to boot various partitions on your PC so you can boot the partition with your other OS on and reinstall the bootloader from there. For Windows Vista you can follow the procedure outlined above direct from your Windows Vista installation (run cmd as administrator to avoid problems) and for Linux you can use grub-install or the grub shell to rewrite the MBR. . . . .
